Dear Elmo,
Do I have to wear sunscreen under my sun shirt?
No. Sun protective clothing is designed to replace the need for sunscreen – not simply add a layer on top of it. Our UPF50 sun shirts provide ample protection against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
Wearing sunscreen beneath a sun shirt is redundant. Kind of like eating dinner before you eat dinner. Or exercising before you go to the gym.
Besides, you could get the gooey, greasy sunscreen residue all over your cool sun shirt.
While the skin beneath your sun shirt is protected, don’t forget about the rest of you. Get a quality sun protection hat to protect your face, ears and neck. And dabble a bit of sunscreen on areas that may still be exposed to the sun.
What’s the Best Sun Protection Hat?
Definitely go for one that has sun protection built into the fabric, like the UPF50 sun visors from Coolibar. Coolibar actually has a nice range of sun protection hats in different style to suit your style and adventure.
How Do I Pick a Sunscreen That’s Safe for My Kids?
Glad you asked, as we actually covered that topic in a previous sunscreen blog. Only two sunscreen ingredients have been deemed as safe and effective by the FDA. Those ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. You’ll find other factors to consider in our previous blog.
You’ll find a slew of specific sunscreen recommendations at the Sun Cancer Foundation.
And, of course, you want to keep in mind that a sun shirt beats out sunscreen across the board for longevity, durability, optimum protection – and straight-up good looks.
