About Cape Life Apparel

With a background in graphic tee designs and a home base in Southwest Florida, we know all about shirts. And we know all about the sun. We put our two specialties together to deliver the best sun shirts you’ll ever wear, period.

On a mission to delight and protect

Our mission...

Is to keep you looking as cool as you feel. We fulfill this mission with our signature line of Cape Life UPF50 sun shirts. In addition to blocking out 98% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, the high-tech sun-protection fabrics we choose are breathable, moisture-wicking, and deliver topnotch protection for the lifetime of the shirt.

Cape Coral is our home

Southwest Florida suits us perfectly.

Our home base is in an area that averages 266 sunny days per year. Yes, that’s a lot of sun. That’s why we create a lot of sun shirts. You’ll find our Cape Life shop in Cape Coral, Florida, minutes from Fort Myers and not far from Sanibel. Cape Coral’s claims to fame include the largest burrowing owl population in the entire state, its 400 miles of canals, and, of course, the location of the Sun Shirt Capital of Southwest Florida.

Protection you can trust

Our sun shirts qualify for the Seal of Recommendation

Fabrics rated UPF 30 or higher qualify for the Seal
of Recommendation
from the Skin Cancer Foundation. That means we’re in.
Our sun shirts boast an ultraviolet protection factor of 50, which is the highest you can get. We’ve long focused on quality, testing – and rejecting – a litany of sun-protection shirts until we landed on the manufacturers that lived up to our rigorous standards. Vapor Apparel, Coolibar, BAW and Paragon are a few of our trusted partners. Their products have passed quality tests related to: perspiration, colorfastness, breathability, water submersion, and overall durability.

We’re not going to print our designs on just any ole shirt. We’re going to deliver the highest quality with the highest sun protection rating and the highest levels of comfort and style. Nothing less will do.

Breathable shirts, breathable printing

Dye-sublimation printing won't peel, crack or fade.

Topping off high-quality sun shirts with eye-catching graphic designs is like putting the icing on the cake. We opt for designs that reflect the personality and vibe of Southwest Florida, with palm trees, fishing and boating themes, sunbursts, bicycling and beach scenes as some of our most popular.

Unlike traditional shirt printing where the design is printed on top of the fabric, dye-sublimation printing is a process where the ink is actually absorbed into the shirt. Think of it as like a tattoo for fabrics. Dye-sublimation printing ensures the sun shirt fabric remains breathable and the design won’t crack, peel or fade.

From Concert Tees to Graphic Sun Shirts

A note from Cape Life founder Steve Lane:

It all started at the record plant in 1980. That’s when I was a roadie and bus driver for the Detroit band The Rockets (I’m in a white tank top in the photo.)

I discovered the wonderful world of concert merchandise in 1982 and began working for Winterland Productions. I handled the tour merchandise for musicians and bands like Eric Clapton, Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac – just to name a few.

After my life on the road, I started a screen printing business where I did contract printing for companies that shipped all over the world. A few years later I was selling licensed merchandise to stores across the United States, from your local mom and pop stores to large department chain stores.

Now in my later years, you’ll still find me printing and
selling shirts. The process is a lot different from when I started in 1982.

All of our UPF50 shirts are printed through a process called dye sublimation – the only way I believe they should be printed (silk screening ruins these types of shirts –BEWARE).

All our partner brands have passed the quality test. And all
our designs have passed the rigorous approval process to ensure they bring the coolest look for the coolest shirts.

It’s all about the shirt!
