How Do You Wash Sun Shirts? - Ask Elmo
Share
Dear Elmo,
How do you wash sun shirts and UV protection clothing?
Well, I would wash sun shirts the same way I wash pots, pans and dishes: Lick them clean. But only if the shirts had cheese or peanut butter stuck to them. You might want to try a different tactic.
And the tactic depends on the clothing manufacturer. The high-quality sun shirts we sell are durable and easy to wash. Just pop them in the washing machine. Wash on cold for gentlest results. Tumble dry low or hang to air dry.
The one thing to remember is not to use fabric softener as it is prone to clogging up the breathability of the fabric.
Does the sun protection wash out of UPF50 shirts?
That also depends on the manufacturer. In the case of our sun shirts, the answer is no. The UPF50 protection is built right into the fabric, ensuring it lasts for the entire lifetime of the shirt. The high protection levels also mean our shirts get the nod from the Skin Cancer Foundation.
But not all sun protection clothing is created equal. Some may use sprayed-on UV protection, which can wash off in as few as five washes.
Don’t buy those. Go with our high-quality sun shirts instead.
Oh! And if you ever need help washing a pot, pan or dish, I know a dog that can lick them clean as a whistle. Just so you know.
